Pining for Pennsylvania
June 23, 2022 – June 27, 2022 EDT
Central PA is home to the Ridge and Valley Appalachians and the Appalachian Plateau. This unique geologic region has hills that appear as a s-curve across the state and the roads have had to adapt to the natural terrain resulting in some of the best roads in the Northeast. What better way to enjoy them than loading up some camping gear and mounting your German steel steed for a 4 day weekend trip?
Our base camp is the Steel Steeds Campground located directly on the west branch of the Susquehanna River that caters to motorcyclists. If tent camping isn’t your thing, don’t fret, they have cabins as well as RVs you can rent.
Plenty of eating options as Lewisburg is just on the other side of the river and has many restaurants just a 5 minute ride away. Or the Susquehanna smokehouse is walking distance, just next door for dinner. Firewood is available if you want to cook by the fire.
We are centrally located to any areas you may want to explore. Pennsylvania Dutch area is a bit south east near Lancaster. You can visit the Harley Davidson factory in York PA in about 3 hours roughly due south. Want to relive the scenes from the tv show The Office? Scranton is about 2 hours north east. Less than an hour away is Centralia, famous for the underground coal fires that forced the town to be abandoned along with the graffiti highway. And if you want to see an eclectic collection of bikes, Bill’s Bike Barn is half an hour away.
And if you want roads, we are smack in the middle of a ton of G1, G2 and G3 roads from Butler maps.
Rates range from ~$10/night for tent space to ~$65/night for cabins and up to ~$105/night for a large RV, so there is something for every budget.
Please RSVP here and make reservations for your accommodations at https://www.steelsteedscamp.com.
Route details
We have a few routes planned out at the site in 3 different lengths ranging from about 90 minutes to 8 hours total ride time so you can pick whichever works for you each day or make your own. Routes are available both as GPX files that can be loaded into most any GPS and a Rever route that can be followed directly in the app:
- A quick side trip over to Bill’s Old Bike Barn via some twisty roads takes about 90 minutes to cover ~45 miles.
GPX File
Rever route - Fun roads Option #1 takes a north east loop with a 4 hour first loop covering about 130 miles to first fuel stop and lunch in Williamsport. The return leg is about 1:45minutes covering ~55 miles, for a total day of about 185 miles and just under 6 hours riding
GPX Outbound (before lunch)
GPX Return (after lunch)
Rever route outbound (Before lunch)
Rever route return (after lunch) - Fun roads Option #2 takes a south west leg with a 4:20 leg covering about 120 miles to lunch in State College. We have another long leg to return with about 3:45 covering about 105 miles to return for a total day of about 8 hours total riding and 225 miles
GPX outbound (before lunch)
GPX Return (after lunch)
Rever route outbound (before lunch)
Rever route return (after lunch)
Ride out
The campground is ~215 miles by highway from Westchester. As we have members from all over Westchester and the surrounding areas, we won’t have a single group ride out, but allow everyone to plan their own best way and ride out with others near them.
I’ll likely ride out with some twisty roads for the first part of the day and then highway to bypass Scranton et al and stop for food & fuel opportunistically. Others are welcome to join me, please reach out to Niels if interested.
